Community Resources
The Earth Science Outdoors pilot project has developed resources for schools and communities.
We have worked in partnership with organisations including Lothian & Borders RIGS to produce public leaflets (see below).
Our Teachers Guides for various sites in east Scotland are available for anyone to use and adapt - for example Countryside Rangers could use them for their activities with schools or groups and the images and text are available free for any educational use.
Activities for all ages describes some simple activities to explore earth science themes for groups.

Barns Ness, East Lothian
Barns Ness is a coastal site close to Dunbar, and one of the best places in Central Scotland to see fossils and find out what Scotland was like in the Carboniferous Period. The layers of limestone found here represent the ancient sea floor and are packed full of fossil corals, crinoids and shells.

North Berwick, East Lothian
The rocky coastline and islands around North Berwick are all that remains of a period of intense volcanic activity. Around 340 million years ago, several volcanoes erupted near here, leaving hard igneous rock that can be explored in a short walk along the shore.
